ATU Systems In Lakeland, FL

The State of Florida in July 2023 enacted a bill requiring Lakeland properties less than an acre in size to use specialized ATU systems rather than traditional septic systems.

Why Are We Changing to ATU Systems?

Waterbodies in Lakeland and other Florida areas have been determined to have extremely low water quality. The primary problem is excess nitrogen.

The goal of HB 1379 is to increase the water quality with the help of “enhanced nutrient-reducing/nitrogen-reducing onsite sewage treatment and disposal systems.” These septic system replacements are also known as “aerobic treatment units.” To simplify it here, we’ll refer to them as “ATU systems.”

About the New Systems

ATU systems work by infusing the contents of the effluent storage tank with oxygen. The result is energized bacteria, which go to work breaking down and digesting the waste far more efficiently than with previous septic systems.

Studies show that ATU systems bring about a reduction of up to 75% of existing nitrogen, producing far cleaner liquids to exit the drain field and end up in Lakeland-area groundwater.

Other than significant nitrogen reduction, ATU systems operate pretty much the same way as traditional septic systems. No modification to drain fields will be required when installing an ATU system.
